Hole 2
Hole 1
Westward Ho!
Hole Description
A wide open, inviting first hole for which the drive needs to be down the
right hand side to avoid the fairway bunkers. The second shot is slightly up hill and from the
middle of the fairway you cannot always feel the full force of the prevailing westerly
wind that will move the ball from right to left once it is over the green.

Little Eye
Hole Description
This hole plays longer than it appears; with the gorse behind foreshortening the green. A well designed golf hole that requires a precisely struck iron shot to find the putting surface. Anything
left or right will feed away from the green. A flag positioned in the back left of this
green is a risky shot to take on.

Sands of Dee
Hole Description
Cross the bridge to the seaward side. Stop and take in the view of the River Dee
towards Wales and get a commanding view of the hole up to the green. A dogleg to
the right, on which longer hitters will need to carry the bunkers but must take care to not run through into the far fairway bunkers. Rough to the right is thick and will make it difficult to hold the green on your
second shot. A tee shot played close to the fir trees (avoiding the side bunkers) gives
you the option to play a high shot or a low running one into a green that sits on the edge of the River Dee.

Red Banks
Hole Description
A short four par which can be taken on by the longer hitter. Alternatively, a shorter drive avoiding the fairway bunkers, will leave the option to go the high or low route. The long green, with a slight tier, makes it difficult to get the ball pin high with the green falling away to the rear.

Hilbre
Hole Description
With the tee being on the edge of the cliffs, the player will feel the full force of any wind with their tee shot. A nest of fairway bunkers make the second shot challenging. Be aware that the
out of bounds cuts in close to the left side of the green for a players approach.

Donga
Hole Description
Hitting the fairway is essential on this strong, par 4 hole. A drive down the left avoids the fairway bunkers but players must also be wary of the out of bounds. This will give you the best opening into the
green. From the fairway, the carry over the Donga (dry ditch) for the second shot will be shorter which opens up the green.

Wirral
Hole Description
The trouble on this hole is the Wirral Way; a disused railway line which creates an out of bounds all the
way up the left side. This, coupled with the natural contours of the fairway, can leave a player with
an awkward lie. The second shot needs to be placed on the left side of the fairway to take the greenside pond out of play followed by an approach to a large green protected by subtle breaks.

Simon’s Bridge
Hole Description
Played from an elevated tee to a green that runs diagonally away from your left to right, the hole plays shorter when the pin is on the left side. Shots to a central, or right sided pin must avoid the strategically placed front bunker and subtle mounds. Club selection is vital, as is the need to hit the correct level of the putting surface.

Spinney
Hole Description
A dogleg right, played around a copse of trees, provides one of the course's most demanding tee shots. A well placed tee shot will still require a well played approach to a long undulating green, with a run-off into a green side water hazard on the left. A flag positioned on the back half of this green
must be taken on with caution.

Hole Description
A tough par three from a sheltered teeing ground, which ideally calls for a fade off the tee. Players must avoid the front and side pot bunkers that protect

Covertside
Hole Description
The green can’t be seen from the tee as the ground falls away on the driving distance. The drive is protected by a series of bunkers down the left side and out of bounds down the entire right side. A mid-iron or more will generally be required on this strong, par 4 hole.

Steeple
Hole Description

Hummocks
Hole Description
The Hummocks (dry ditch) runs diagonally across the fairway. Players must decide whether to play up the left or right side. Up the left will leave a longer approach, whilst up the right will leave a mid to short iron. The elevated green plays half a club uphill and is steeply sloped on all sides.

Dawpool
Hole Description
A sharp, dogleg right. To see the green an accurate tee shot to the left of the fairway is called

Rubbing Stone
Hole Description
One of the most difficult par fours on the
course. Out of bounds on the right, so your tee shot needs to stay left. The Rubbing Stone (an immovable obstruction) is well short of the front edge of the green. The Redan style green is angled from front right to back left and will feed approach shots towards the back left of the green. Find the wrong place on this green and a two putt is difficult.

Thor’s Dyke
Hole Description
A great view of Thurstaston Hill in the distance awaits you from the tee of this pretty, short par 3 hole. A stream runs in front of this green and demands the right club to find the middle of
the putting surface. The green slopes to the stream so an overstruck tee shot is penalised with
a nervous chip towards the stream. A great 17th requiring skill and good nerve.

Badgers’ Sett
Hole Description
A sharp, dog leg right and a hole that requires you to make a decision on every shot. Be
aware of the out of bounds all along the right hand side of this hole. A long straight drive can run out of fairway which ends just past the bunkers, visible from the tee. The second shot is often played from a sloping lie, so care must be taken whether playing a layup or attempting to hit the green in two. The approach to a large, two-tiered green is well protected by bunkers on either side.
